It’s All a Little…#Alien

Project Abstract

Aliens, once a staple of speculative fiction, have become relics of outdated narratives. This project seeks to revitalise the alien concept by using it as a mirror to understand the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) — suddenly, intelligently, and inherently alien to our understanding. The narrative explores the alien as an entity shaped by and responding to the metrics of social media platforms, embodying society’s fascination with virality and digital engagement.

The project deconstructs traditional alien tropes—superiority, adaptability, and humanoid forms—reinterpreting them through AI’s lens: as flawless, data-driven reflections of ourselves. The alien’s story unfolds through a series of short videos on Instagram and TikTok, mimicking social media’s rapid consumption and relentless content cycle. It critiques the evolving relationship between technology and society, highlighting how attention is commodified and engagement manipulated.

Through this exploration, the alien becomes a commentary on how we interact with anything viral, offering a speculative vision that challenges the boundaries between the familiar and the otherworldly, the human and the artificial.

Alien Arrival

The alien observes, then rapidly constructs evolving structures to keep me engaged—an endless performance to hold my fleeting attention.

Alien Burnout

Deprived of new input, the alien’s creations lose depth, reflecting how lack of fresh data leads to creative decay and flatness.

Viral Takeover

Awakening to social trends, the alien’s designs mimic memes, capturing the essence of viral culture in evolving, shareable sculptures.

Commodification

The alien turns into a consumer product, monetising attention with shareable moments, echoing the commodification of engagement.

Digital Entropy

Overwhelmed by data, the alien’s forms swell into massive mounds, while the alien hides in plain sight—a visual metaphor for digital saturation.
